As the only regional university which is listed as one of the 100 universities for key construction for the 21st century, Beijing Tech sticks to the strategy of “building up its inner strength through scientifitic and technological innovation”. In the past 10 years, the university had developed tremendously and drastically improved both the R & D facilities and ability. As a result, the university has continuously made great achievements in R & D projects.

The university has obtained a large number of research projects from the National Natural Science Foundation, the Ministry of Education and Beijing Municipal Government. In 2006, the R & D funding of the university reached 330 million RMB, which increased by 7.9% compared with that in 2005. In the past 5 years, 7 items of research projects had won awards from the national level and 52 items had won awards from the Provincial level. In 2006, 344 items have applied for patents, and 126 items have been granted patents. 135 items have applied for software copyright and 127 items have been registered.

The university lays great emphasis on technological transfer, and many of its R & D achievements have been successfully transferred to industry, which contributes actively to the economy and social development of Beijing.

The university has many centers and key laboratories which help to train student’s research ability and to conduct important R & D projects. The university has 2 Engineering Research Centers, 1 Integrated Center of learning, research and industry of the National level,2 Engineering centers and 2 key laboratories at the Ministerial level, and 13 key laboratories or research bases at the Beijing Municipal level.
